New York Jets Notes, Quotes 2009-05-15
--The Jets re-signed TE Bubba Franks. The veteran tight end, plagued by injury and ineffectiveness in 2008, had only six receptions in eight games last season, and none after Sept. 28. On the other hand, it's not surprising in that the Jets still are short at the position, with nothing but undrafted free agents currently backing up receiving specialist Dustin Keller, whose blocking has been questioned.

And perhaps the Jets felt they had to move quickly. With the Brett Favre-to-Minnesota rumors heating up, you never know. Maybe the Vikings would've signed Franks, a teammate of Favre's with both Green Bay and New York.

Actually, general manager Mike Tannenbaum telegraphed this move after the Jets made their three picks in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Jets didn't select a tight end, and Tannenbaum said then, "I don't think the book is totally closed" on re-signing Franks. It's hard to figure out when Tannenbaum is bluffing and when he's not, but maybe that's the mark of a good general manager.

--With rookies not back yet at the Jets' complex, second-year QB Erik Ainge got a lot of reps in the first week of OTAs, although Kellen Clemens got more. The competition between Clemens and fifth overall pick Mark Sanchez will begin in earnest May 18 when Sanchez returns to New Jersey after graduating from USC.

Clemens was asked whether it feels like a competition without Sanchez in camp.

"I'm competing every day," Clemens responded. "Whether it's against Erik (Ainge) or Mark or Chad Pennington, Tom Brady, Trent Edwards, myself. There's a long list of competitors. We're always competing."

--The Jets' habit of performing "due diligence," as GM Mike Tannenbaum calls it, led to yet another rumor recently when an internet report claimed the Jets were thinking about signing troubled CB Adam "Pacman" Jones, who was released by Dallas in February. But NFL sources indicated the club is not interested in Jones, who has been in much trouble with the law during his NFL career.

However, the Jets still might be interested in WR Plaxico Burress if he is able to resolve his legal woes.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "People can focus on, 'You don't have this, you don't have whatever,' but I can put it right back on you and say we have a better defense than you have and we have an offensive line that's probably better than yours. We have no excuses. By the time we snap it for real, we'll see who's making excuses." -- Coach Rex Ryan when asked about the Jets' perceived weaknesses.
